How Foodbuy Group are supporting members with the new ‘Simpler Recycling’ law

03 April 2025

From 31st March 2025, the new government legislation, ‘Simpler Recycling’, requires all businesses with 10 or more full-time employees to comply with separating recycling on site, prior to collection by a waste contractor.

The new requirement for businesses will be 4 separate waste streams for:

  • Residual (non-recyclable) waste
  • Food waste (mixed with garden waste if appropriate)
  • Paper and card (subject to flexibility options)
  • All other dry mixed recyclable materials (plastic, metal and glass)

In preparation, we have been supporting our members with their waste management practices ahead of the legislation commencing. We have been supporting members across multiple sectors by collaborating with new waste management partners, establishing effective systems to ensure we have offerings that meet the unique requirements of each site.

This not only aligns with Foodbuy’s mission to do the right thing for people and planet, but also shows our commitment to tailoring our offerings to meet the needs of each member.

How are we supporting our members?

We recently ran a waste tender to identify companies which we can collaborate with to effectively support our members. As a result, we are now partners with three companies that provide efficient and engaging workspace recycling solutions.

We have chosen these partners to ensure we can tailor our offerings to the needs of our members across various industries, be that workspace, travel, education, healthcare, or any other. Each of these partners adhere to the same colour schemes for continuity.

By building strong partnerships with these business recycling solution partners, we are actively supporting and educating our members in driving behavioural change, increasing their recycling and in turn, reducing their carbon footprint.

Member case study

A prime example of our support is our collaboration with 14Forty, an integrated facilities management provider. We recently facilitated the installation of internal recycling bin stations at one of their clients’ new offices. This project was done in collaboration with our new waste solution supplier partners.

The client faced challenges in finding a supplier who could meet the tight delivery timescales required by the new UK legislation. Relying on a traditional waste contractor would have led to increased costs and delayed bin delivery.

To address this, we teamed up with our new framework supplier, who assessed the requirements and offered an optimised bin solution. Thanks to their in-house manufacturing capabilities, they ensured timely delivery for the project's launch.

What did this achieve?

  • Delivered a cost saving to the client through our new supplier relationship
  • Ensured compliance with the ‘Simpler Recycling’ regulations
  • Contributed to a seamless mobilisation process
