DASH Water, a B-Corp supplier, is fighting food waste by infusing their sparkling water with ‘wonky’ surplus fruits and vegetables. They have now taken the next step in their sustainable journey and officially become carbon neutral.
Becoming carbon neutral certified requires an organisation to measure and offset their scope 1 and 2 emissions as a minimum requirement; essentially those emissions owned and controlled by the company. After measuring this with Planet Mark, DASH realised that, like most service businesses, this only accounted for a very small percentage of their total emissions, they calculated ~1%. The remaining 99% of their carbon footprint lies within their scope 3 emissions. This covers emissions from their entire product lifecycle from cradle to shelf, everything from ingredient sourcing, to product packaging and distribution. The team at DASH decided this wasn’t good enough.
“Therefore, we have gone above and beyond the technical requirements of carbon neutrality to also measure our Scope 3 emissions using CarbonCloud.”
DASH went on to offset the totality of their measured emissions – scope 1, 2 and 3 – with the help of Ecologi and Respira.
One of their offsetting partners is Blaston Farm in Leicester, who are leading the way on regenerative farming techniques to improve soil quality and in turn sequester carbon in the soil.
“DASH Water would not exist without our farmers in the UK, so it is important for us to give back to where it all began.”
Dan Bussey, the Farm Manager at Manor Farm, Leicestershire says, “We are working towards a regenerative agriculture model, restoring soil that was becoming less and less fertile and having symptoms of poor health. None of what we do is complex or unheard of - what is working for us is the combination of our improvements and a focus on the whole farm.”
What’s Next in Sustainability at Dash?
DASH will continue to infuse wonky and surplus fruit and veg into their drinks to help combat systemic food waste. The team are now also focusing on reducing DASH’s carbon footprint and setting out a pathway to achieve Net Zero by 2030.
“We don't just want to be offsetting, we want to be accountable for the emissions we're emitting into the world.”
